Learn how to solve the last 2 edges on your 4x4 with this easy to follow guide. We have written this guide with beginners in mind. If you struggle at any point please do reach out to us and we will be more than happy to help. Let's learn the 4x4 edge flip algorithm.
This is also known as the 'Edge Flipping Algorithm' or 'Edge Flip'.
All this algorithm does is flip 2 adjacent edges, its really simple to perform and easy to remember.
Before performing the edge flip algorithm we have to set the edges up correctly. There are 3 right ways the edges can be and 3 wrong ways. Let's compare:
Note: The matching edges need to be opposite each other for the edge flip algorithm to work.
If your edge pieces are in the correct position (as shown in the image above) then you can carry on to the next step. Otherwise let's fix that.
Holding the cube with the 2 edges on the TOP LEFT and TOP RIGHT perform the algorithm: R' U F' U'
Now, hold the 4x4 with the 2 edges on the FRONT LEFT and FRONT RIGHT. Before performing the edge flip algorithm we have to do a (u) move. This will set our cube up to ensure that the edges are paired up correctly after the edge flip algorithm.
Holding the cube with the 2 edges on the FRONT LEFT and FRONT RIGHT perform the algorithm: R U R' F R' F' R
After performing the 4x4 edge flip algorithm you should now be able to solve your 4x4 Rubik's Cube as a 3x3 (unless you get parity that it) - View our 4x4 Parity guide.
